Basically, the bed is too high for my very compact apartment. It's like it takes up too much cubic footage, and now there is not enough room for me to move about freely. The bed is always in my peripheral vision, which sort of sucks royally. After trying to digest the crypt-factor, I flopped onto the bed to at last try it out, and it was like belly flopping into a jar of Fluff. It is so soft! (not a good thing.) I had specifically requested a firm firm firm mattress on the phone with Rona over at the Hastens showroom in Soho, and she convinced me to get a softer mattress after I told her my stats (height, weight, sleeping patterns). According to her, smaller people need a less firm mattress for whatever stupid reason. Despite the fact that I prefer sleeping on a mattress that is pretty much like a piece of plywood. I like firm. And my new bed, with its 25 year warranty, is definitely NOT firm.
Which means that I might potentially have a marshmallow mattress until way past the time when I go through menopause. Which seems so freaking far away that I am shocked at how long 25 years is. And therefore how long I am stuck with this mattress. Which was custom made, since NO ONE apparently orders a bed in a full size anymore these days. It's queen sized all the way, baby. And then I had to be fussy and request gray checked fabric, instead of the ubiquitous navy check, so that it would match the gray wooden platform. All of which added up to requiring my bed to be made specifically to order, in Sweden nonetheless, and then shipped over to me in Brooklyn. Completely negating the claim that these beds have a "zero carbon footprint," which is pretty much impossible anyway, since as I sit here writing this post, I am making some sort of carbon footprint, I am sure of it.
I need to call Rona and let her know that my bed is pretty much like a gray check Peeps, and I am not sure I can sleep on such poofiness for the next 25 years. And in the meantime, I will be moving the mattress into storage and unfolding my perfectly acceptable 3" thick organic cotton futon from the top of my wardrobe, where I already stowed it, and I will sleep on that in monkish asceticism until I have a place where my bed can co-exist without intruding into my visual space every time I open my eyes.
Sigh…it is like I everything I do requires a do-over at least once, because I always seem to fuck it up the first go round. This is getting frustrating after 34 years.

What happened with your bed? Did Hastens make good on the exchange? I found this post when searching for a pic of the gray check (am considering ordering a King Superia in medium firmness). Which model did you order? I like a softer bed but the soft is way too soft even for me. Hope you were able to get what you wanted.
Hello never tried out a high quality wool and horsehair futon with a natural latex core that is as hard or soft as you wish? You would have spent not even 20% of the money, it goes perfectly well on any bedframe and you don't breath 25 years old dust since you put that on a slat that lets it breath perfectly well and that you can undust as much as you want. And finally it doesn't have this red neck look...
actually, i do have a wool futon, check out my post about it here: http://www.myhappinessproject.com/2008/08/organic-futons.html
and its really lovely. however, i wanted a REAL mattress, as the futon was great, but not super soft + fluffy. and the bed I got from Hastens IS breathable and it is made from horsehair and wool as well, and it is on slats, as I chose a platform for it.
and lastly, i appreciate the "redneck" look of this bed. I chose the gray checks specifically. I really like how it looks — and frankly would never consider this redneck looking. but i do not feel the need to justify my aesthetic choice, despite just doing so.
i suggest you try sleeping on a Hastens bed and then get back to me. Your futon will suddenly seem like you are sleeping on a cardboard box, no matter how organic and wooly it is.
as well, the hastens customer service is pretty amazing. the sales person recognized me at the ICFF yesterday, and we had a lengthy conversation. considering that we never met in person before and she remembered me from my name only, I was duly impressed.
thanks.
Hi, Aimee, I like to know what happenend with your bed and you...
.Did you actually sleep in it and was it comfortable? Was yours a soft or medium tension?
I am thinking about buying a hastens bed and tried them in the store..
The soft one felt very nice, but because I wasn't used to such a 'sink in' feeling, it felt maybe too soft..
Also I could not help but overhearing a cusomer complaining about dips in her newly bought bed;
It was explained to her that this is normal, that a hastens bed is supposed to mold around you and leave body impressions.
Did this happen to your bed?
Would love to hear more about your hastens experience
Thanks,
Hi, Aimee,
What happened with your Hastens mattress, you, and Hastens?
Do you find yours comfortable, and would you mind to tell which tension you have? Soft or medium?
Does your mattress leave body impressions?
Would love to know as we are looking into buying one of their 'Exell' frame beds, which are on sale right now..
Thanks
Hi, Aimee,
I did read some of your postings, they are great..
I have a not so good experience with a hastens bed, I bought: mysterious pains in shoulder and hips..
A swedish chiropractor told me it could be caused by the magnetic field formed by the metal
springs in Hastings..
Do you experience anything like that?
I've just made the behemoth in the bedroom error and found your blog. Which mattress did you get? 2000T is what I have without the box spring, like you for my platform. I've written the sales person to ask if I can exchange to the Excelsior as it is smaller, 9" total. I haven't actually taken the mattress part out of the box, just the topper bc my mistake is so obvious. Do you even care because you love your Hastens so much? I can't believe I didn't measure grrr. I should know better! If you have the 2000T, what is the total measurement of the mattress and topper...other than giant? Was their follow up service good?
hi all,
to answer some of your questions, I bought the bottom of the line Hastens bed. I am not even sure which one it is and the mattress does not say which one I have. its like a tall box spring plus a few inches thick topper thing.
The tension is soft. Which I usually prefer a very firm mattress, Rona (I think that is her name) suggested the softer tension based on my weight and my sleep patterns. the rule of thumb is that you actually should have a softer mattress is you don't weigh a whole lot, as the mattress should support and cradle your spine. Therefore, if you are a heavier person, you would need a firmer mattress. The softer mattress took a few months to adjust to, and I actually called them to complain about it. They told me to give it a few months and they were right. I am used to it now, and it is so comfortable. However, it does not leave body impressions when I get up. ( I weigh about 111lbs, if this helps.)
I have never once felt achy or had any pains waking up, from the mattress. it is super comfortable and despite being soft, does not feel squishy or cheap.
The bed was sort of tall though with the topper on it (10" + 4"), which was taxing my fitted sheets. So I stuck a fitted sheet on the bottom part and also use a fitted or flat sheet around the topper thing and all is great. The bed looks, and is, very cozy.
I have it on a platform base that is a couple inches high, and therefore have eschewed the wooden legs it came with. The base mattress is VERY heavy though and has sadly scratched the platform base a bit. If I had been there when the guys delivered it, I would have tried to alleviate this somehow. BUt at this point, I am like, whatever.
I love my bed.
hope this helps!
best,
Aimee
